Prof Dr. med Christoph Schankin is the Head of the University Headache Clinic and the Research Group “Headache and Migrainous Visual Disturbances” at Inselspital, Department of Neurology. After studying medicine at the University of Heidelberg and at Columbia University, New York, he performed a research stay at the Biology Department of the University of York, UK. He then completed his specialist training at the Neurology Department of the University of Munich Hospital – Großhadern under the supervision of Prof. Dieterich and Prof. Brandt. He specialized in the field of neurological emergency and intensive care medicine. During a DFG-funded research stay with Prof. Goadsby at the Headache Center of the University of California, San Francisco, he expanded his clinical and scientific profile to include headaches, in particular rare forms of headache, secondary headaches and the mechanisms of migraine and migraine-related visual disorders. He is a member of national and international neurological societies, has acquired substantial scientific grants, and has received several prestigious scientific awards, including the Harold G. Wolff Lecture Award of the American Headache Society and the Wolffram Prize of the German Migraine and Headache Society.
